Measurements of the Electron Cloud Density in the Pep-ii Low Energy Ring*

چکیده
bstract Clouds of low energy electrons in the vacuum beam pipes of accelerators of positively charged particle beams present a serious limitation for operation of these machines at high currents. Because of the size of these accelerators, it is difficult to probe the low energy electron clouds over substantial lengths of the beam pipe. We have developed a novel technique to directly measure the electron cloud density via the phase shift induced in a TE wave that is independently excited and transmitted over a section of the accelerator. We infer the absolute phase shift with relatively high accuracy from the phase modulation of the transmission due to the modulation of the electron cloud density from a gap in the positively charged beam. We have used this technique for the first time to measure the average electron cloud density over a 50 m straight section in the positron ring of the PEP-II collider at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. We have also measured the variation of the density by usi magnets to control the electron

Secondary Electron Yield Measurements and Groove Chambers Updated Tests in the Pep-ii Beam Line*
Beam instability caused by the electron cloud has been observed in positron and proton storage rings and it is expected to be a limiting factor in the performance of the positron Damping Ring (DR) of future Linear Colliders such as ILC and CLIC [1, 2]. In the Positron Low Energy Ring (LER) of the PEP-II accelerator, we have installed vacuum chambers with rectangular grooves in a straight magnet...
متن کاملIncoherent Effects Driven by the Electron Cloud∗
As a result of the synchrotron radiation from a positivelycharged beam, an electron cloud is expected to develop in the vacuum chamber from the combined effects of the photoelectric and secondary emission processes [1–3]. We provide here a first estimate of the electron-cloud effect on individual particles of the beam. We focus on the spacecharge tune spread, the distortion of the beta function...

متن کاملPEP-N: A 0.8 GeV × 3.1 GeV Collider at SLAC
The PEP-N project is a proposed new e+e− collider at SLAC to operate in the center of mass energy range of 1.0 GeV to 3.1 GeV. PEP-N consists of a new Very Low Energy electron Ring VLER (< 800 MeV) to collide with the PEP-II e+ Low Energy Ring LER (3.1 GeV) parasitically to PEP-II operation for BaBar. Since the e+ ring has a fixed energy, the very low energy ring needs an energy range of 100 Me...
متن کاملSuppression of the Beam Instability Related to Electron Cloud at Pep-ii B-factory*
PEP-II B-factory operates at a record high circulating current currently ~2.5 A in the positron ring. Electron cloud effects became apparent [1] when the positron ring current reached ~ 0.7 A with a bunch current ~1.5 mA. Initially, electron cloud induced beam instabilities significantly limited collider luminosity [2]. However, suppression of the electron cloud related beam instabilities have ...
